This Friday the city of LA was full with Girl scouts selling cookies after school.
Several of my schoolmates are girl scouts so my journalist friend Wren and I decided to learn more so we interviewed two: Isabella and Dahlia who were working in the Cookie booth outside our school:
Here’s 10 things you probably didn’t know about the GIRL SCOUTS:
SASHES: Girl scout sashes have different colors representing different level and seniority in the scouts. In the front of the sashes are the badges earned for scout activities and in the back they can add additional badges that show additional achievements each girl scout has done on her own.

2. BADGES: Each girl scout wears different badges showing the activities they have experienced like Archery, First Aid, Democracy and camping.

3. PROFITS: Girl Scout cookie sales help fund Girl scout troops.
4. BENEFITS: Girls learn a lot being a scout including: Responsibility, How to sell stuff, Math (from calculating the profits of the cookie sales) and friendship with other girl scouts. Among the most memorable experiences for girl scouts are Camping, Horseback riding, Whale watching, visiting a fire station just to name a few…
5. COOKIE HITS: Most popular girl scout cookie in our school this year was the Thin Mints and they’re the only cookie sold in our school that seemed to be Vegan - so that’s a hint for the next sale. Mid City LA prefers vegan cookies!

6. MEETS: Girl Scouts meet every other Sunday and every meet is different than the one beforehand! The Girl scouts are still looking for new members so everyone is invited to join.

7. LOCAL: The local girl scouts in our neighborhood is 71115 - so if you’re interested in joining Google it or just find someone in your school and ask them about it or see links below.
8. COOKIE HISTORY: According to the Girl Scout website - “Girl Scout Cookies were originally home baked by girl members with moms volunteering as technical advisors. The sale of cookies to finance troop activities began as early as 1917, five years after Juliette Gordon Low started Girl Scouts in the United States.”

9. WHICH COOKIE IS FOR YOU:
GLUTEN FREE: Toffee-tastic and Caramel Chocolate Chip cookies.
VEGAN COOKIES: Thin Mints, Peanut Butter Patties, Lemonades, and Toast-Yay! Cookies.
KOSHER/ HALAL: Most flavor varieties are kosher and Halal certified (per their website).
10. HEALTHY COOKIES : My personal view as an athlete who's health conscious is that the girl scout cookies didn’t really have anything that was for me. The girl scouts don’t even have an oatmeal cookie on their website.
That begs the obvious question : Shouldn’t the girl scout organization especially in a city like Los Angeles create healthy cookies? Isn't it time they sell cookies made out of better ingredients with more vegan options?
Girl scouts and their parents let us know in the comments below what you think ?
Good luck to all the girl scouts in our city wide cookie sales.
