I went to see Migration because it looked like a fun film from the studio that also made
Minions, Despicable Me, Sing and The Secret Life of Pets.
Before the film started that studio gave the audience an extra new short Minion film . This time Minions are on the moon.
Personally I loved the short MINION film a lot more than the full Migration film.
Minions have amazing characters that you want to follow as they get in and out of trouble as always . Sadly that was not the case for the Migration film.
Migration tells the story of a family of ducks that decide to migrate for the first time ever.
As you all know - every year all birds leave their homes and travel to warmer homes for the winter. But in this film, unlike other birds - the father duck was afraid to leave his pond.
Thanks to his two young kids and wife he decides to go on this adventure for the first time.
The older son persuades his father they should migrate to Jamaica.
The story didn’t make that much sense and there was no real urgency to see how the story ends maybe cause I felt from the get go that they’ll eventually reach wherever they wanted to go and so I was never really worried for them.
The ducks start their journey to Jamaica and along the way have a lot of mini adventures including fighting a chef that wants to catch and cook them.
The flight scenes in 3D were amazing as 3D is perfect for flight shots and it makes it look really special.
That said - after a awhile I was bored cause great 3D scenes are no substitute for a boring story.
At the end of the film the duck family reaches Jamaica and there’s hint there might be a sequel with a new migration soon. So expect a sequel in the future.
Personally,
I think the creators of this film fell in love with the 3D flight scenes in the film and put too much energy on making them look amazing and not enough energy to make sure the story is a lot more engaging and the characters are ones we have more fun rooting for.
This movie works better on 3D than probably on a TV cause without the flight scenes in 3D not sure the movie would hold on it’s own.
While the story would get a lower rating - I gave it a higher score because I’ve never seen such impressive 3d Flight scenes.
Also, I got to say that from all the characters I actually liked the most the Parrot, a side role narrated by Keegan Michael Key - who I've been a huge fan of since Key and Peele.
BUDDY RATING: 8
